It has extra gain stages also, so when that is all cranked, it sounds VERY close to my Mesa Triple Recto, except it has more of the Marshall upper mids.

I think some of the mods listed in "the ultimate JCM-800" page are quite good and are well known for doing the trick on a JCM-800 to give it just a little extra gain and quite a bit more bass. I think some of these mods are worth it and others are best left alone. Mods 1-4 seem to be harmless enough.
