WebWater voles were once a familiar sight, but numbers have dropped in recent years. The ‘Restoring Ratty’ project has been establishing a population of water voles through captive breeding since 2024. Before then, Ratty (named after the Wind in the Willows character) hadn’t been seen in Kielder for over 30 years. WebJun 28, 2024 · More recently, landscape-scale projects include a multi-year reintroduction in Kielder (the Restoring Ratty project) and in September 2024 Yorkshire Water were set to release more than 100 water voles at Timble Ings Woods – part of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
